Meet Colin Cowden

Colin
What was your first job & what did you learn from it?
My first job was working in a Subway making sandwiches at the age of 15. In addition to learning how to make sandwiches, it was also my first experience in what goes into running a business from worrying about food costs, money controls, staffing, and the importance of great customer service.

What motivates you professionally?
I’m a big fan of setting personal and professional goals. I use them to keep me focused and moving forward. As long as I am making some sort of progress towards my goals, I have to be doing something right.

What is something most people don’t know about you?
I love to bake. I’m always up for a new baking challenge, but I tend to bake cookies most often. They’re easy enough to give out to friends and family to prevent me from eating them all myself.

What is the most important message you want to convey to prospective franchisees?
Any prospective franchisee should understand the franchise they are buying into. Individuals who do the research, ask questions, and are excited by the brand are going to be the ones best set up for success.

What skills are essential to become a successful franchisee?
Being a team player. If you join Circle K or any other franchise, you are joining a team where everybody has the same goal and wants to succeed. There will be times when there are decisions that may not make sense. Ask questions. Be curious. Let’s reach the goal together.

What is your favorite inspirational quote?
“Don't panic.” - Douglas Adams.

While it might not be the most obvious inspirational quote, it does remind me in times of stress, uncertainty, and too many unread emails in my inbox, that panicking isn’t going to help and the best course of action is to stay calm and focused.
